  NDS aims at bestowing knowledge based education to the Deaf in the areas of social awareness. For this we conduct such programs like health, HIV/AIDS awareness, Life Skill Workshops etc. The several activities conducted over the years are:

Ruma at TEDxGateway

It was a proud moment for NDS as Ruma was invited to TEDx Gateway to speak on the work she has done with the deaf community. Her idea of mainstreaming the deaf by breaking the language barrier and enabling them to be productive partners in the industry was deeply appreciated.

 

Match with Apollo Munich

Apollo Munich played a cricket match against Noida Deaf Society on 22nd Dec 2012 in the 'Friendship Cup' at Chilla Sports Complex, Delhi. A place where language was not a barrier, the ultimate goal for both teams was to win the cup. The match was well fought by both teams. Apollo Munich lifted the Cup while NDS was awarded the Runner's up trophy. All players were rewarded with medallions. In addition to this, special performances were also awarded with medallions in different categories out of which best fielder and best bowler was won by NDS students.

 

NDS Tigers

NDS Tigers our very own cricket team won a 15 over match with the team from HCL Technologies. NDS team outperformed HCL in all areas with Arif from NDS winning Man of the Match title

 

Exposure Visit to HCL

NDS was invited for an exposure visit to the office of HCL in Noida on 15th of December. The visiting students, taking different computer courses at NDS, went through different departments accompanied by 2 interpreters from NDS. The environment was new for our deaf students and they were curious to know about the different work and projects in the company. Such exposure visits often help deaf to increase awareness about the corporate environment and equip them for the future endeavor.

 
                 
         
 

Genesis Global School Initiative

Students from a Genesis Global School, a leading public school in Noida visited NDS to meet our students and understand how learning is made accessible for deaf. A session on sign language was organized for them which was much enjoyed by them. They then invited our students for the screening of movie Dabang 2. About 100 boys and girls accompanied by their trainers went for the movie the next day. Though they could not understand the dialogues but they still enjoyed the stunts and the action scenes.

 

 

Dr. Madan Vashishth at NDS

Dr. Madan Vashishth Associate Professor at Gallaudet University at Washington is an achiever and a role model for many Hearing -Impaired in our country. During recent visit to India he visited NDS too. In a session with the students he taught and inspired them to visualize and plan their future to help them take a right path towards their goals. Later in the afternoon Dr. Vashishth took a session with the staff of NDS. The session got everyone thinking about the future of NDS and the importance of working together as a strong team keeping the vision in mind. It was a wonderful session that got the whole team together and in truly understanding the meaning of shared responsibility.

 

Ruma at ISTD

Indian Society for Training & Development (ISTD), established in April 1970, is a national level professional & non-profit society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It has a large membership of individuals and institutions involved in the area of training and HRD from Government, Public and Private Sector Organisations & Enterprises; Educational and Training Institutions and other Professional Bodies. ISTD had organized a seminar on training and development for up skilling India from November 30th to December 2nd. Ruma was invited to talk about innovations in training and development focusing on the deaf community in India. It was an honor for NDS to present at this forum which was attended by some of the most distinguished experts and key players in the field of skill development. The talk was much appreciated for its focus on solutions in spite of the daunting challenges that the field of skill development and livelihood presents specially for PwDs

 

Sensitization at CSC

CSC one of the top 10 IT services firms in India offering high-value technology solutions celebrated their annual event Samskruthi on the 14th of December 2012. Noida Deaf Society was invited to be a part of the ceremony. 5000+ Employee's, CSC India Head and Vice President of India CSC witnessed this great event. NDS students established their presence by performing a mime depicting the state of education for deaf in India. Another performance - Silent National Anthem by the deaf students of NDS,was highly appreciated by all.

 

 
                 
         
 

Hearing Aid distribution

Our students have previously benefitted by the distribution of Hearing Aids by Star Key Foundation. This month also a team from the organization came to NDS on 9th of November to collect ear moulds of the students wanting to use hearing aids to help them hear better

 

Certification of our students by Shangri-La

On 8th of November team from Shangri- La hotel comprising of Mr. David Hopcroft –General Manager at hotel Shangri-La, Mr. Dheeraj Bhushan –Director HR and other team members visited NDS. The purpose was to distribute certificates to the candidates of our Hospitality Training Program. This program which is accredited by Shangri La inculcates necessary skills in the deaf and prepares them for jobs in different departments in the Hotels

 

Special Sign Language Session for Parents

Ruma took the opportunity to meet the parents and have a short session in basic ISL. Training the parent in sign language becomes important for them to connect with their deaf children and understand them better. This will enhance the emotional growth of their children and further strengthen bond between the parents and the deaf.

 

Sweaters for our Primary Education Students

In a thoughtful gesture parents of one of our student of primary education came forward to gift sweaters to the students of primary wing. With the winters approaching the little children were more than happy to receive the gift which matched perfectly with their school uniforms. The warmth of the loving gift and the broad smiles added to the cheerful atmosphere of the school.

 
                 
         
 

Barclays Shared Services at NDS

Barclays Shared Services offered to volunteer at NDS. The team visited NDS on 29th of October to give a presentation on Money Skills and Management. The sessions taken through visual presentation and interpreted in Sign language taught the students about the value of money and how to prioritize their expenses and save for any emergency. Three different sessions were interpreted by Aditi Aggarwal, Kitty Gupta and Gaurav Rana of NDS.


 

Visit to Adobe

On 6th September Rotary club Noida organized an eye check up camp at NDS for our students. In a day long camp the doctors examined the eyes and advised them on different eye related problems faced by the students. A few students were asked to undergo further check up for their eyes which also was facilitated by the club at one of the hospitals.

Teacher's Day at NDS

On 5th of September that is Teacher's Day all our students showed their gratitude towards their teachers by presenting them flowers. The teachers in turn blessed them for a bright future. Ruma Roka on behalf of all the teachers also thanked the students and explained to them the importance of teachers and guide in everyone's life. The little children of primary wing at our sector 29 centre also brought little handmade cards and flowers for their teachers. Lioness club members too visited NDS to felicitate our Deaf trainers for their efforts and commitment and presented small gifts.

Mrs. Deepika Jindal wife of Mr. Ratan Jindal- Vice Chairman and Managing Director Jindal Stainless Ltd. accompanied by Mr. Rajeev Williams- Corporate Head, CSR, Jindal Stainless Limited, visited NDS. In direct interaction with the students interpreted by Ruma herself she tried to understand more about their lives, their struggles and their achievements. The students in their honor presented a mime which the guests enjoyed and appreciated.After visiting all the classes personally the guests left with the hope to further strengthen the ties between JSL foundation and NDS..

 

NDS and Mphasis Partnership

A major highlight of the month was that four of our students who have been working at Mphasis, in the Information Technology Outsourcing were selected for an advanced training programme. These Deaf employees have been performing well consistently and the management felt that they were now ready for the next level. This has been a very proud moment for NDS and we are delighted to see our students scaling new heights. NDS was invited as the resource organization to conduct this training and Ruma Roka, Founder and Preeti Dhingra, Programme Manager travelled to Pune from 25th to 28th September.

Independence Day Celebration at NDS

15th of August, our Independence Day is a day remembered with pride and honor by every Indian. The team from Punjab National Bank headed by Zonal Manager and other Managers from different branches of PNB on this day visited NDS to celebrate this special day with NDS students and staff. The celebrations started with the traditional flag hoisting ceremony after which NDS students presented Silent National Anthem- National Anthem in Sign Language. They also presented a mime to entertain the guests. The team took turns to address the students and explained the importance of the day in our lives. Concluding for the day all the people present together enjoyed a sumptuous lunch brought by the PNB team.

 
                 
         
 

Special session by Barclays Shared Services

A team from Barclays Shared Services visited NDS to conduct a session on Life Skills and Work Ethics. The Barclays team took keen interest in explaining all the finer points through examples and role play. Students also in turn attentively sat through the session with often questioning about the points. After the session the students were taken for an exposure visit to the Barclays office.

 

Students of Amar Jyoti Foundation visited NDS

The students of the program- Diploma in Special Education – Deaf and hard of Hearing in this exposure visit, interacted with the students and also showed interest in all our training programs. As per the requirement of the course, the students are provided the opportunity to visit various organizations working with children with special needs. The direct interface with the Hearing Impaired will help them know them better and in future prepare them to develop better understanding about their culture.

 

7th NDS Anniversary !

On June 13th, NDS completed 7 years of working for the Deaf community. These seven years mark the sheer passion and commitment of NDS in bringing about a positive change in the lives of our students and taking them to a level where they can lead lives of dignity.

The festivities started with Ruma addressing the students. Her speech about the long road travelled in the 7 years and the challenges overcome was highly inspiring and the students sat with rapt attention watching her sign her speech.

The students also came up with splendid dance performances proving their expertise in different dance styles like Kathak, Folk, MJ style and contemporary. A mime chosen from a movie of the legend Charlie Chaplin was presented making the whole atmosphere at the auditorium light and jovial. All the performances were greatly enjoyed and greeted with big applause.

 

Exposure Visit for Hardware and Networking Students

On 26th of July, our Networking and Hardware students visited office of Adobe Systems Pvt. Ltd., a leading IT company. The students were accompanied by our volunteer- Shiwani Khanna. It was an excellent opportunity for our students as they got a chance to see the practical application of the knowledge acquired by them at NDS, in an industry. Students also experienced the work culture in an IT company, a skill which can never be taught in a class room.

 

 
                 
         
 

 

Visit to Mall

NDS organized an exposure visit for our Remedial Education students; they were taken to a mall in Noida on 24th July. The students were guided through different sections of mall-different franchises, super markets, food court, through escalators and lifts, with their trainer Chitra Khajuria. The trip proved to be an education cum fun learning for the students opening their minds to a larger perspective at things, bridging the gap between their theoretical knowledge with the practical experience.

 

East meets West

A group of US nationals – all hearing impaired visited NDS on 12th July. The group, on a tour to different countries for cultural exchange between the deaf, was visiting different countries. On their arrival in India the group paid a visit to NDS. They took turns to speak on different topics like Mime, Drama, Deaf culture and others in their country. Later NDS students also shared their views about the same and also visitors and the hosts comfortably gelled with each other and sat chatting and sharing jokes after the presentations. The group also shared Indian lunch served at NDS with their Indian counterparts

 

5th centre of NDS functional in Jaipur!

Apart from other areas many students have been coming to NDS from Jaipur. Some even travelled twice or thrice a week from Jaipur to Noida to get trained at NDS. Seeing their commitment and interest a need was felt to start a new centre in Jaipur itself to facilitate more and more youth boys and girls alike to join NDS. In a simple traditional way, the centre was inaugurated by NDS founder Ruma Roka, along with other team members from NDS. The centre will be holding classes for English Basic, Indian Sign Language and General Knowledge

 

Sensitisation at NTT DATA Global Delivery Services Limited

A Sign Language workshop was organized at NTT DATA Global Delivery Services Limited in Gurgaon, with management and supervisors. The organization has been working with the deaf and communicating with them with the help of an interpreter. The need to break free from dependency was felt to focus upon business communication and or day to day communication between a Supervisor and reportee. The training focused on process specific vocabulary, questions and communication so as to customise the training basis requirement

 
                 
         
 

Summer Workshop

To engage the students during the much awaited Summer Vacations NDS organizes a Two Month Summer course every year. The program aim is to help the students spend their holidays constructively.  The classes are designed for  both education and entertainment purpose covering subjects like English, Hindi, General Knowledge, Maths, Art and Craft, Movie making, Movie Screening  and others. Life skills sessions are conducted for these young students by Ruma herself to help them prepare to face challenges in future. The impact of the popular program was such that few students even shifted to a rented accommodation in Noida as the respective school hostels also closed for the vacations. A total of 65 students have been enrolled in the program.

 

New Uniform for Primary Education Students

Our centre in sector 29 holding primary classes for the little children will be donning a new look. The students have been gifted with new uniforms and the class rooms with new furniture. The generous act was carried by Driplex Infrastructure.  Driplex Infrastructure a unit of Driplex Water Engineering is a leading turnkey solutions provider of water treatment plants, especially for the power sector. In a simple ceremony held on 26th May at our centre in sector 29, the team from the organization distributed the uniforms to the beaming children.

 

New Centre at Hisar!

We proudly announce opening of our new centre in Hisar, Haryana. NDS started classes for English Basic and Indian Sign Language at its new centre in Hisar, Haryana from 16th April. The students were commuting from different parts of Haryana. Some used to travel for four hours to attend a two hour class. Though some were able to brave through the long journey others still couldn't as the families did not agree to send them so far. The zeal still remained in them.
Opportunity knocked when NIIT foundation helped us connect with Jindal Steel Foundation, who have been working very actively in Hisar for the welfare of the local community especially skill development of youth belonging to underprivileged backgrounds. NDS is proud to share that our centre in Hisar has been started in partnership with JSL Foundation.

 

Workshop at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya

Every year Sardar Patel Vidyalaya holds a workshop for all its Senior Secondary students. This year again the workshop was held. Ruma Roka, NDS Head and General Secretaaccompanied by a deaf trainer Sudhir started the Indian Sign Language workshop on the first day and sensitized the students about deaf culture. She conducted a sign language session teaching the students alphabets and basic vocabulary in sign language. On the final day the students visited NDS to communicate with the deaf with the sign language they learnt during the workshop. They also presented the mimes which were highly appreciated by all the NDS students and teachers.

 
                 
         
 

Helicopter Ride

Three students from NDS went for a pleasure trip around Delhi in an helicopter. The students who were chosen based on their good performance and discipline were in for a pleasant surprise when they went for the trip – in a Helicopter - a once in a life time experience for them. Sikorsky, designers and builders of the world's most advanced helicopters for commercial, industrial, and military use, in association with United Way of Delhi arranged the fun trip. The chosen three students along with a few other children from other school were taken around Delhi and Noida for a short ride in the helicopter.

 

Annual Felicitation Ceremony- 2012

The much-awaited time of the year, our Annual Felicitation Ceremony was organized this year on 22nd January. This day holds special significance for students of MS Office, Desktop Publishing and Graphic Design and Networking and Hardware programs as these graduating students are awarded certificates by NIIT Foundation. Old World Hospitality group who have also been proactively employing NDS students sponsored the ceremony by providing us the venue at the India Habitat Centre and arranging the High tea for our students and guests.
Mr. David Hopcroft, General Manager Shangri La Eros Hotel kindly consented to be Chief Guest. Mr. P. Rajendran, Chief Operating Officer, NIIT, was invited to be our Guest of Honor. The function was well attended by Vijay Lakshmi Khattar of Old World Hospitality group, Neeraj Agarwal Director NIIT Foundation, Mr. Dheeraj Bhushan, Director HR, Shangri La Eros Hotel, Ms. Usha Vardarajan, President, NDS Board of Trustees and other distinguished guests. Ruma Roka, Founder and General Secretary NDS, took this opportunity to express gratitude towards all the supporters of NDS and share about the future vision. She also shared about the challenges on the road ahead.
Congratulating the graduating students on the occasion, Mr David Hopcroft, General Manager, Shangri-la Eros Hotels, India, said “We have already hired eleven hearing impaired students from NDS and we are extremely satisfied with their work. One amazing thing about these students is that they are always smiling and willing to go the extra mile. We congratulate NDS on their good work. We will continue to recruit more hearing impaired youth from NDS.''
NDS students presented a mime to depict the struggles of their lives due to lack of communication at home, school and in finding employment and how NDS is a place of hope for them to develop their skills. It was also heartening to see the testimonials presented by two of our alumni who are now working in the industry. They shared about the transformation that came in their lives after they joined NDS and the life they are leading now as contributive members in the society. NDS also presented a short film depicting the year gone by and the victories achieved. A splendid dance performance by our deaf students was the highlight of the day besides the happy faces of the successful students. The day ended with high tea for all those present.

 

Sports Day

Exercise and games are as important as education for the children. 27th February was an exciting day for our primary students as NDS held sports meet for them at a park near the centre. Different events like Simple race, Frog Race, Lemon and Spoon race, Relay Race were held for all the students. Enjoying the day, the children enthusiastically and sportingly participated in all the races. Later medals were given to the winners and Champions were declared from each of the two groups. After the exhausting competition children were given nutritious meal to re- energize them.

 

Atrenta India

On the occasion of National Youth Day 12th January, Atrenta India an IT company, invited NDS students for an exposure visit. The students had a brief session on Networking/Hardware with the highly qualified and experienced IT Systems team of the organization which was followed by lunch. A total of eight students went for the visit. Students were delighted when Mr. Sushil Gupta, Vice President and Managing Director, India took out time to meet the students. Later, students had a great time playing foosball and Pictionary with Atrenta team members. A team from the company visited our organization as part of their CSR initiative. NDS students who are currently taking internet classes and other students attended the session. The students got to learn basics of Microsoft Outlook- its applications and uses. The training was imparted through a visual presentation and interpreted in sign language.

 
                 
         
 

Barclays

Barclays Bank has been associated with NDS since 2011 and has time and again come up with different volunteering options at NDS. Barclys HR team spent a whole day with NDS students. They held a session on fire safety and also donated fire extinguishers to NDS. The members in two different sessions introduced the students with the basic fundamentals in Banking and also through a presentation taught our MS Office students about Excel and its uses. The sessions were highly interactive and the students inquisitively came up with number of queries. The visitors also attended a sign language session where they were taught basic sign language and finger spelling. During the lunch break the team distributed lunch packets to all the students. On 28th of March Barclays management team again visited NDS. The purpose was to teach our students about Work Ethics and Life Skills. The sessions which went on for two hours each were explained in detail by the Barclays team members and interpreted by Aditi Aggarwal and Kitty Gupta of NDS.

 

Exposure to DELL

Two of our Hardware and Networking students got a chance to visit Dell office in Gurgaon. The visit was organized by one of our partners on 14th February for a group of people with different disabilities. The students were given practical knowledge by Dell professionals about different hardware components of a computer.

 

UFO Film Festival

NDS students attended UFO 0110 International Digital Film festival at Sirifort Auditorium, New Delhi.  The festival took place from the 9th of March to 15th March 2012 in New Delhi showcasing avant-garde digital films from around the world. A special screening of films on Hearing Impaired/ Speech Impaired people was organized on 14th of March at the festival.  NDS students accompanied by the teachers enjoyed the movies .The movies were presented in British sign language which our students found to be interesting and quite encouraging as they could readily relate to the characters in the film.

 

World Water Day

Society for Human Alliance Need in association with Botanical Garden of Indian Republic organized an event marking the World Water Day on 22nd March. NDS students were invited to be a part of the event. It was a good opportunity to inspire in them appreciation and importance of water in everyday life. Such exposure visits are important as it contributes in holistic development of our students and make them conscious about the issues pertaining to environment. Later the students accompanied by the teachers also went around Botanical garden and saw cultivation of various medicinal plantations.
